November 14 is Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, a student-led movement launched in 2018 by AAA School Safety Patrollers.
This annual walk and day of dialogue honors Ruby Bridges, who became a civil rights icon on Nov. 14, 1960, when she bravely integrated an all-white elementary school in Louisiana as a first grader. Her historic walk (escorted by federal marshals) and Norman Rockwell's famous illustration have become powerful symbols of courage and the civil rights movement.
More than 60 years later, Ruby's legacy continues to inspire students to stand against racism and all forms of bullying, one step at a time. The idea for Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day began with a group of fifth graders at Martin Elementary School in San Francisco and has since grown into a national movement. In 2022, AAA and the Ruby Bridges Foundation partnered to expand the event, with more than 343,000 students participating nationwide.
