General Herkimer Students Shine at Statewide Math Tournament

This spring, three outstanding fourth graders from General Herkimer Elementary represented the Utica City School District at the 2025 Statewide Mathematics Championship, held at the New York State Museum in Albany on Saturday, May 31.

Ali Ablay, Habibah Binti Hassan Ali, and Madina Nar earned their spot in this prestigious competition by placing first in the regional virtual qualifying round in March. With the support of their teacher, Mrs. Anna Johnston, the students trained for weeks using the First in Math program. They often gave up recess and free time to sharpen their skills and build confidence.

At the championship, the students competed alongside some of the best young math minds from across New York State in a fast-paced, team-based setting. Before the competition began, the trio warmed up together on the museum floor, focused and excited. A highlight of the day came when Habibah and Madina spotted Robert Sun, the creator of the 24 Game and CEO of First in Math. They introduced themselves, and Mr. Sun was thrilled to meet them in person.

For Mrs. Johnston and her class, this journey has been more than just a math competition. It has been a celebration of hard work, growth, and the joy that comes from believing in yourself.

Congratulations to Ali, Habibah, Madina, and Mrs. Johnston!
